No One Is Looking

Who are you when no one is looking?

That may be a frightening question. The answer to the question reveals who you are. It’s your character.

Think about it!

Who you are when no one is looking will eventually be seen by everyone. That is why developing your character is vital no matter who you are. Everyday tests your character. Sometimes the tests are easy and other times the test push us towards failure.

I recently faced an easy test. I was at the hardware store and purchasing a few items. The cashier scanned the items. In her defense, I asked her the price of mulch. As I looked at the items on the checkout screen, I noticed the mulch. I did not want the mulch. I thought   $4 plus dollars for mulch was expensive. No problem. In my mind, I begin to think about the cost of gas. I needed just one bag of mulch. Instead of driving another 30 minutes down the road to a larger chain hardware store, I decided to just pay the extra dollar and change for the mulch at the smaller hardware store. Not a big deal. The cashier presented me with the total I owed. It was around $5 and change. That did not seem right. One of the items I was purchasing should have been $10. For a moment, I thought maybe it was my lucky day and I picked a clearance item. I scanned the checkout screen one more time. The $10 item was missing on the screen.

What would you do?

This doesn’t seem like a big deal. However, this decision will create a ripple effect in your character development process. It reminds me of a verse from the Bible.

If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.

(Luke 16:10)

Who are you when no one is looking will become who you are when everyone is looking.
