You Don’t Know Until You Try

Think about your dreams and aspirations for a moment.  What stops you?

I was listening to a Seth Godin’s “Akimbo” Podcast and was struck by something he said. It was the idea of getting unstuck. Nike had the slogan, “Just Do It!” Seth talked about the falsehood of writer’s block. It also reminded me of something a mentor once told me. He said, “You never know until you try.” I could also hear my mothers voice at the dinner table saying the same thing about a new food I didn’t want to try.

At the root of the very thing that stops us from moving forward is FEAR. So, we get stuck. But FEAR can be so convincing. For the most part, it may just be in our head. What would happen if we tried taking the next step in spite of our FEAR? I’m not talking about doing something life-threatening. What about your dream to become a baker, a writer, or go for the promotion at work? What if you feel stuck in your job but you dream of doing something more meaningful with your life? What is stopping you?

Think about it!

Imagine for a moment…if you could do something and not fail…what would you do?

What’s stopping you?

Four thoughts to consider when you get stuck moving forward:

  1. Name the FEAR
  2. Talk to someone wise (more than one person)
  3. Do the hard work
  4. Take the next step

You don’t know until you try.

  1. Thank you for this inspiring admonition to dream, get “unstuck” and take action. Actress Jennifer Garner just shared in a GMA interview how saying “yes” to an understudy opportunity led to her successful acting career. Her quote is a great reminder to not let fear rob you of unknown opportunities. “That has happened so many times in my life where I’ve been like, ‘Yeah, I’ll do that.’ Something will get screwed up, so just say yes. You get more from saying yes than saying no.”
